What are PDO Threads?

PDO threads are a minimally invasive procedure that do not require any major incisions or general anesthesia. PDO threads are dissolvable sutures that have tiny barbs strategically placed and molded all around the thread. The barbs are inserted into the face and anchor onto sagging skin and the thread can be maneuvered to achieve a naturally youthful and defined look.

What can PDO threads treat?

PDO threads can be combined with a PDO thread lift or used alone to improve acne scars, volume and even enhance lip borders. It is often referred to as a non surgical face lift. Not only can it improve the appearance of sagging skin, PDO (polydioxanone) can also help promote the stimulation of collagen production and neovascularization, which helps to improve skin elasticity, texture, fine lines, and volume for a timeless rejuvenation. We recommend a consultation prior to scheduling this procedure as not everyone is a candidate. Megan has successfully been performing PDO thread lifts since 2016 and trains other injectors on this procedure at Academy of Aesthetics school in Scottsdale.

PDO threads can be used in areas of the face such as cheeks, jowls, marionette lines, neck and jawline. It is also not uncommon to see threads being used in unison with lip filler to reinforce and sharpen the border. Megan is also trained in treating some of the more invasive services like a nose lift and brow lift with threads. PDO threads are also a quick and simple way to boost collagen production in addition to lifting, tightening and giving the skin a smooth appearance.

Why Aesthetic Enthusiasts Love PDO Threads

  • The Ultimate Collagen Blueprint: Smooth and twist threads act as a supportive mesh beneath the skin, triggering a massive wave of natural collagen and elastin production as they dissolve.
  • Flawless Texture & Volume: Highly sought after for smoothing stubborn acne scars, erasing fine lines, tightening creepy neck skin, and sharpening lip borders without adding the “puffy” volume of filler.
  • Completely Customizable Prevention: An incredible preventative treatment that strengthens the skin’s foundation, making it a perfect pairing for Botox or facials.
  • Zero Social Downtime: A quick, in-office treatment with minimal recovery, allowing you to slip right back into your busy Scottsdale routine.

What is a PDO thread lift?

A PDO thread lift used barbed threads for skin tightening and skin lifting. The most common areas for PDO thread lift are the brows, midface and jawline. PDO thread lifts can also be used in the neck and body. Megan has used lifting threads on patients in body areas such as the breast, thighs, butttocks and backs of arms for overall skin rejuvenation as well as lifting. Barbed threads can be used on their own but often work best in combination with smooth threads and twist threads.

How long does a PDO thread lift last?

PDO thread treatments are long lasting, non surgical and will fully absorbed within four to six months. The sutures leave no scar tissue and still give you quicker and natural results. These popular skin tightening procedures can last up to 18 months. Patients will be able to maintain optimal results with regular treatments.

PDO Thread & Thread Lift Frequently Asked Questions

It is hard to compare all three treatments since the products are used to achieve different results. While each treatment is good for aging, smoothing wrinkles and folds they still have different purposes. Botox will temporarily freeze muscles to prevent them from contracting. Dermal fillers are known for restoring volume and filling in fine lines and wrinkles on the skin. PDO Threads will give results closer to a facelift surgery rather than Botox or dermal fillers. It is important to have an in office consultation to confirm that you are a good candidate and can get the results you expect from the treatment.

Although it is a much simpler procedure than surgery with much less recovery time, this treatment is performed with local anesthetic. In our Scottsdale office we recommend our clients arrive early for topical numbing and take Tylenol prior. We then use Lidocaine to numb the area that will be treated before performing the lifting procedure. Once numb most people do not report much pain with treatments. Soreness and bruising can last up to two weeks.

As with any treatment, side effects are possible. Side effects from a pdo thread lift include but are not limited to asymmetry, a dimpled appearance to the tissue, and infection.

After a PDO thread lift it is recommended that no “jarring” activities be performed by the patient for about a month. In our Scottsdale office we also recommend not to receive any dental procedures for a month after your PDO thread lift.

We recommend not taking Ibuprofen following this procedure as it may inhibit collagen production and spread bruising. Although not a surgery, a PDO thread lift must be kept clean to prevent infection and makeup in the area should be avoided until healed. It may be tender to sleep on the area and a aesthetics pillow like the envy pillow may be helpful.

PDO thread lift treatment can be a good temporary option to lift the skin before an event. If considering a more permanent solution to lift the skin you may want to consult with your surgeon prior to your pdo thread lift appointment.

Two weeks prior to treatment with a thread lift in the brows we recommend a botox anti-aging treatment. This will prevent movement in the area and lessen the risk of the barbed thread breaking from excessive movement as well as decrease wrinkles!

We would recommend waiting until you are no longer tender after your treatment to receive a facial. Recovery time can vary by patient but at least two weeks would be recommended.

Although thread lift does not require sutures, this is still a medical procedure. A registered nurse or higher must be properly trained to perform thread lifts. There recently has been a rise in many unlicensed persons performing pdo thread lifts or collagen stimulating threads. Estheticians should not be performing threads or skin lifting and is out of their scope.
